Artist of the Month: January: Squeeze

I decided to start the new year with one of my favorite bands that I just rediscovered. They are Squeeze.
The video is for the song, "Last Time Forever" from their Cosi Fan Tutti Fruitt album (one of my faves) and I picked it because of the wonderful scene where their keyboard player, Jools Holland, attacks his piano with an ax. *lol*

Artist of the Year: The Damned

Since it's the end of the year I looked through all the artists of the month and decided on doing an artist of the year from those names. It was tough, because I love all the choices, but I picked a group who has a new album out and they are doing a tour supporting the album. They have been one of my favorite bands for about two and a half years and their lead singer is one of my faves of all time. :)
I picked The Damned as the Artist of the Year for 2008. They have a new album, "So Who's Paranoid?" out now and they did a small US tour and they are in Europe touring now. This clip is from their appearance on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson they did a couple months back. This is for their song, Diamonds (or Shallow Diamonds). I hope you like it. :)

Video of the Week: Band Aid II - Do They Know It's Christmas

I was looking around YouTube for some Christmas videos to make as my Video of the Week for the next few weeks and I saw this gem. It's the 1989 remake of the song, Do They Know It's Christmas. It was produced by the great 80s production team of Stock, Aiken and Waterman and stars such acts as Jimmy Sommerville, Bananrama, Kylie Minogue, Cliff Richard and Jason Donavan. It's not as good as the original, but I like it. :)

I decided to make Ultravox as the Artist of the Month, because they are a wonderful band. I've been a fan of theirs for several years now and I love their former lead singer, Midge Ure. Let's hope the rumors of them reuniting is true. :)

Special Halloween Treat: Fright Night

This isn't music related, but since this is October, and it's the Halloween season, I thought I'd post the movie trailer to my favorite horror flick, "Fright Night." Its about this teenage boy, who finds out his next door neighbor is a vampire. It stars Chris Sarandon, Amanda Bearse, and Roddy McDowell. I like it, because it has a comic twist and I love horror movies with a bit of comedy mixed in. :)

Artist of the Month: The Damned

Since October is the month of Halloween, I thought I'd make The Damned the artist of the month. The Damned started in punk and went on a journey and became a great Goth band in the 80s.
I thought this song was very appropriate to post. It's Grimly Fiendish, which is one of my favorite songs from them. Dave Vanian, IMHO, is very fiendish indeed. :P

For the past few days DJ's team had been getting a lot of attention. Harry stood up during lunch and asked everyone to assemble at DJ's practice ground.
It didn't take long before a crowd of 200+ was gathered. I called my team together and went to see what was going on. In the center of the crowd was DJ's team. They were practicing their powers and running drills like the rest of us, only much, much better. They were so fluid as a group. It was hard to tell when one action ended and the next one began. Keith and Harry were clearly impressed.
"How long have you been working together?" Harry asked DJ.
"Since the first day of camp," DJ said proudly.
"That's impossible," Keith told him. "You're telling me you've mastered all this in 3 weeks? You had to have met before, worked together before. Your team's fluidity, it borders on precognition. "
DJ beamed. "We get together in a chatroom on Saturday nights, but until the first day of camp Holly and I had never actually met the gang. Here let me introduce you." He held up his hand and the group stopped their exercises and gathered around him.
"My assistant Holly, codename: Modest Mouse." He gestured to the young, beautiful brunette standing to his left.
"Her skin secretes a deadly toxin so even a touch from her can be fatal." Holly turned to DJ and blew him a friendly kiss. Her power sounded horrific but it was hard to be scared with her standing there grinning ear to ear. She noticed me in the crowd and gave a quick little wave.
DJ moved on, proudly introducing his troops. He pointed to a curly haired cutie.
"Next is Molly, codename: Heaven17. She is a psychic who can blur the vision of her victim until they cannot differentiate her from her surroundings. We call this power "invisibility." Whoa, that's a useful power.
Jage raised his hand. "Can she make other people and objects invisible too?"
"Absolutely," DJ confirmed. "In fact we have been pairing her with Becky, codename REM. Becky has magnified hearing so the two are kind of our little spy team."
"Really?" asked Dimitri, our resident master spy. "So what has your little spy team picked up so far?" He was calling DJ out, and DJ seemed very protective of his spy girls.
"My girls can tell you what you've been doing. Or more specifically, who you've been doing."
There was a big murmer in the crowd. D'mitri, I didn't know he was with anyone. D'mitri's cheeks burned with embarrassment. I was as curious as the next guy but I wasn't going to let D suffer.
"Oh I get it," I said loudly. "All their codenames are band names and their leader is the DJ!" I know I was stating the obvious but it did break the tension. I think DJ felt a little bad too. I know he didn't mean to embarrass D'mitri, it was his job to guard his team. DJ went right back to introducing his guys.
"We have Jeremy, codename: Radiohead. Jeremy can control the density of his own molecules. By doing this he can force his body into places no other human can fit and adjust his molecules to get out again in a hurry. We call this power "walking through walls."
"Jennifer, codename: Ludo is our morale booster." DJ laughed a little and ruffled the girl's light brown hair. I could see her as the team cheerleader, she beamed everytime one of her teammates was introduced as if she personally had brought them to this place and time. "Jen can draw oxygen out of your blood cells and up to the surface of your skin. It helps with healing and sharpens reflexes. It also gives a pleasant bubbly feeling." Jen giggled.
"Next we have our prodigy Gerry, codename: Gangof4. Gerry can manipulate the fibers in clothing to such a degree he can turn the same sweater into kevlar, scuba gear or another kind of cloth altogether like a tuxedo."
"So basically he's James Bond," Zeal joked.
"Yeah, or some kind of comic book waiting to happen," quipped Harry.
"Steve, codename: U2 can bring the metals in his body up to the skin to create armor for himself. His skin essentially turns to metal making his physical attacks deadly."
DJ seemed reluctant to introduce us to the last member of his group, a beauty with long dark hair and gentle eyes. He put a hand out for her and she took it, coming shyly forward. "This is Kitt, codename: Heart. Kitt lends her energy to a partner to enhance their abilities. We call this power "Amplify."
My breath caught in my lungs. It was clear from looking at the shy, unassuming girl that Kitt had no idea just how valuable her power was. I turned to the crowd and most of them were drooling and sizing her up like a piece of meat. The idea of multiplying your power was seductive to anyone. Few of them realized that the greater power would require a greater measure of control that none of them possessed. I was thankful she was on DJ's team. I knew he would protect her from the power hungry.
With the crowd still watching, Keith sauntered up to DJ. "I would like your team to be the first inside team. I want you on the front lines. I want your team leading us all."
DJ's team immediately started high-fiving and hugging each other. "It would be an honor" DJ told Keith, shaking his hand. The crowd erupted into thunderous applause. Keith was right (as always) DJ's team was the example. They were strong, intelligent, working together. I didn't even know everyone on my teams name.
We all walked away from that with new resolve.

I almost forgot the Artist of the Month. I have decided to make September's Artist of the Month: Squeeze. I've been a fan of their since 1987, when I first saw the video for "Hourglass." I had a chance to see them in concert in 1998 and they were great. My favorite members are Glenn Tilbrook and Jools Holland.

The video I choose is "Hourglass." It was directed by Adrian Edmundson, who played Vyvan on The Young Ones.

I thought I'd do a video that is from two of my favorite performers. Beth Gibbons of Portishead fame and Paul Webb former bass player for the 80s band, Talk Talk. They came out with Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man (Paul) in 2002 with the album, "Out of Season."
Beth had worked with Paul on his project he did with Lee Harris (former drummer of Talk Talk) called, .O.Rang. Also, Matt Johnson of The The fame worked with them.

Artist of the Month For July: Spandau Ballet

Well, kids, it looks like Spandau Ballet has made it to the Artist of the Month. *does happy dance*

I have been a fan of Spandau Ballet since June of 1983 after seeing the video for, "True" on America's Top 10 and I've been hooked ever since.
This video is the unedited version of the song, "Gold." It was released when they celebrated the 20th Anniversary of their album, "True." Also, I love this video and song. :)
I'm going to change the Artist of the Month for this month and make the August AOtM be the winner of the Modern Rock Idol. (If you don't mind, Ghosty.)

I Made My Decision

I have made my decision and I'm not going to the Peter Murphy concert Sunday. I was thinking about it, and I am able to afford it, but since it's on Sunday the buses aren't going to be that great and I don't want to wait and pay for a taxi. I'm a little disappointed, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it. I'm going to save my money for a possible trip to NYC this fall to see a high school friend. This is all depending on my job and my financial situation. I'm excited to go see Great Big Sea though in August. It'll be my third time I've seen the band from, "The Tropical Island of Newfoundland." *lol*

Not Seeing Peter Murphy :(

Sad to say, it looks like I'm not going to be able to go. There are a couple of major reasons:

A) I have nobody that's going with me, and I would have to rely on public transportation. The public transportation here in Buffalo on Sunday (which is when the concert is) isn't that great. I know I'd take a taxi, but that costs money that I don't really have.
B) Money is not in my favor right now. I have to try to save some money for a possible trip to NYC in October. The ticket is $25, but that's a lot when you're on a budget right now.

I was looking forward in seeing him, but unless someone offers me a ticket and a ride I won't be going, and that breaks my heart.

Not mad about traffic school anymore

I know I am easily amused but sometimes simple things make me so happy. Like on the freeway all the streets have short little names like Ray and Elliot (yes the freeway lists what street you get off on not just some exit number.) My street Guadalupe is the only one that's long so I don't ever have to pay attention to the street signs, my eye just catches when the big name is coming up.

Also tonight I saw a motorist pulled over to the side of the road and as I approached a cop showed up and pulled behind to help. That was just really sweet.

I definately drive differently since The Killers sent me to driving school. I'm actually really glad I went. I pay attention to different things now and I really think it improves not only my driving ability but my whole driving experience as well.

I changed up my music on the site. Maybe we should update once a month because I listen to this site all the time and I want to hear more of everybody's faves :)

My XTC Tribute Page

Here is my tribute to XTC. As you can see I have a picture of an autograph a friend got for me of Andy Partridge's. You can't really see it in the picture, but he drew a smiley face on the peacock feather. It's pretty cool and this is in my collectibles area. The CD got all scratched up, but I saved the autograph. Someday I'll get to meet Mr. Partridge. :D

I found my old website I had made about Talk Talk and .O.Rang. I remember when I first made it I had asked about information about .O.Rang and I get this e-mail message from Lee Harris, drummer of Talk Talk and member of .O.Rang (along with Paul Webb). I was totally floored. We kept a correspondence for a few months. He was a really nice guy.
But here is my tribute to Talk Talk & .O.Rang. Most of the information hasn't changed, except for Mark Hollis retiring from the music business and from what I read Paul and Lee are working on a new project. Here is the link to the site if you're interested. My Tribute to Talk Talk & .O.Rang.

In Search of: .O.Rang

I've been going nuts looking for stuff from this band. They are Lee Harris and Paul Webb from Talk Talk with some help from Beth Gibbons of Portishead and Matt Johnson of The The and other sessions musicians.
I used to have their CDs, but during some money trouble I traded them in, and I've been looking for their albums: "Herd of Instinct" and "Fields & Waves" ever since. They have a very techno sound and I loved their music.
If anyone knows of where to find their material or has them on CD or .mp3 let me know. Thanks.

I thought it would be fun to start a new feature called, Video of the Week. Every week, I (or anyone else) will post a video that looks cool. The video can be from any decade. I'll start with a great gem from the 1980's. :)

The video I picked for the first Video of the Week is a video from The Belle Stars called, "The Clapping Song." The Belle Stars are famous for their hits, "Iko Iko" and "The Sign of the Times." I just love this song because it's so cheesy and quirky. Very 80's. *lol*

The Ludo show completely rocked and all the guys are cool! I was expecting something pretty big and they really delivered. They made the coolest announcement: The band said this was their first chance to see Tempe/Phoenix and because they really liked the weather, the people and the landscape they are going to add a tour date to come back this summer. How cool is that?

A Few Things

Okay, I have a few things to mention. First, in my personal life, I was told I'm now a member of the board of directors to a local health food coop. It's something I wanted, and I know I will do a good job with it. Another personal thing, a family friend of mine is getting a Tony Award. The theater company he works for is getting it for Best Regional Theater. The theater is The Chicago Shakespeare Theater and they do really cool plays.
on the music world, I'm planning on going to see Peter Murpshy on June 22nd. If the show isn't sold out by next week, I'm going to get tickets to it. Peter Murpshy totally rocks and I've been a fan of his for years. :)
I've been listening to the new Flight of the Conchords CD (which I won) and OMG it is ONE of the funniest things I've heard. My favorite track has to be "Bowie."
Speaking of Bowie, the poll for Artist of the Month seems to be tied. Right now, David Bowie & New Order are tied. If the tie isn't broken by the end of the month, I will pick who will win between the two.
Soon, I will announce who will be playing the local free concert series here called Thursday in the Square. They should be announcing the line up soon.

I will not be joining you this Saturday night :’( I have to go to a party that I am not excited for, but if I don’t go then I won’t be able to go to the Diamondbacks game on Sunday and that IS something I’m excited about. I know you will all have a great time and I will be thinking about you. I’ll bring my laptop and see if they will let me stream the show (probably not, but I'll give it the old college try.) "You're awful, I love you!"

So when I was at the MGMT show last month they announced a lot of upcoming shows and Ludo was one of them. I asked my date and he said he didn’t like them. I only knew their one big song and I wasn’t in love with it so I just dismissed it.
I caught that song on the radio again last week and it wasn’t bad. So yesterday (Tues) I thought to myself “well the show is on Thursday, if I’m going to give them a chance it has to be now” and I set out to give them a serious listen. You can probably guess…these guys are amazing! They have an ep called “The Broken Bride” which tells the story of a guy whose wife is killed in a car accident and he builds a time machine to go back and save her but ends up in a war trying to save a village from dragons…the whole thing is crazy and I admit to tearing up at the end. I put the whole set on the blog. If you have a ½ hour, listen straight through 1-4. I also put up some of their regular songs which I really like and “Hum Along” was an instant favorite. So Thursday night I’ll be at the Ludo show, celebrating a band so rockin’ they named themselves after the big sweet monster from Labyrinth.

Well, it looks like the Artist of the Month for the Month is XTC.

I've been a fan of theirs since 1989, when I saw their video for "The Mayor of Simpleton." on MTV. My favorite album from them is Skylarking and my favorite song from them has to be "Grass."

Hola amigos! I missed all of you, truly. I had a great time in Mexico. Got to drink strawberry margaritas from a pineapple and I drank a beer for each of you! In truth I drank more in the past week then in the past year. Snorkeled almost everyday at a glorious lava/coral reef. Wow, it was so fun (now I want to get my scuba license!) Mostly I just lied on the beach and watched the waves roll in. Did eat at a restaurant that had the most beautiful architecture I’ve ever seen. Looked straight out of “Pirates of the Caribbean” the Disney ride, rather then the movie. Came home with sun streaked blonde in my hair and the best tan I’ve ever had. Life is good. Can’t wait for Saturday!

Oh btw MGMT move over, I am all about Bell X1!!!

Radio Stations You Listened to

After listening to the interview Saturday night with Malibu Sue, I started thinking of what stations I used to listen to growing up.
My hometown of Wellsville had had (and still has) two stations. One was WLSV, which used to play To 40. My Dad was a DJ there, which was cool. He used to bring home a lot of LPs and he was Santa Claus every Christmas. Now WLSV is a country music station. There was also WJQZ, which used to be adult contemperary, but now is an oldies station. I worked there one summer as a receptionist, which was great. Maybe this influenced my love of DJing and how I have so many friends who are DJs. *lol*
I also used to listen to CFNY from Toronto. I only could get it on those nights where the atmosphere was right and it was late at night. They used to play some great tunes. It was kind of like what WLIR used to play.
Another radio station I listened to was WFNX from Boston. I would listen to that station whenever I went to Boston. I even have a couple of audio tapes from the station. It was around 1990 when I taped them and I recently listened to them and some of the songs I wonder what was I thinking taping them.
So what stations did you listen to growing up? Do you remember anything interesting about the stations? And are the stations still around?

Any Hitch-Hiker's Guide Fans Out There?

Today, I decided to watch the BBC TV series, "Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and thought it might be a good thing to discuss here. Any Hitch-hiker's fans here? I've been a fan of the books since I was in elementary school. I actually saw the TV series with David Dixon (Ford Prefect) and Simon Jones (Arthur Dent) before I read the books. Douglas Adams was a wonderful writer.
I have the TV show and the movie on DVD, and I'm looking for the radio shows that were made.

Another Ghosty Talent

Ok so get this, Ghosty has this unholy talent for remembering the music we like. Every week he’ll play something and someone goes nuts in the chatroom then Ghosty drops in and says “I knew you loved that song!” Unrequests I think Kitt called them and yeah, I too think they are even more fun then requests. This week I think he guessed the wrong band for Becky from Mps (soon NC!) and he even apologized! It ripped my completely out of Aldo’s and into the real world where every Christmas my sister and I open our presents, give thanks to our parents and then go into the next room and trade off. We have been doing this since childhood. My mom means well but she never remembers who likes what movies or colors or activities. She only has two daughters, Ghosty has hundreds of listeners. The fact that he remembers what bands/songs we love is just completely amazing. If Ghosty has played you an “Unrequest” leave a comment on this post please :)

My sister listened to New Wave stuff like The B52's, Squeeze, The Pretenders and The Ramones, and my brother listened to Queen, Styx, Judas Priest and AC/DC. They al taught me to appreciate music and give it a try.

We Got Tunes!

Hi Folks! It wouldn't be Aldo's without the music we all love so much!

I've started a playlist at playlist.com. Take a minute and check it out, the passwords are the same. I only added a few tracks as a trial - it would honor me if you would head over and add a few tracks of your own.

Now this site is pretty limited as to it's modern rock so I might try to look elsewhere in the future (Kitt, we need our ESB fix!) For now each playlist can have 100 tracks so everyone pick out 10-12 and slap em on. We can make as many playlists as we want so maybe we can get Ghosty to create one for us or we can try to relive the show by creating last Saturday's playlist :)

Artist of the Month: Talk Talk

I thought I would start a new feature called, Artist of the Month. Each month will be a new artist or group.

The first choice is Talk Talk. I've been into them since 1984. Their main members were Mark Hollis (lead vocals), Paul Webb (bass) and Lee Harris (drums). Their biggest hit was "It's My Life." My favorite song from them is "Such a Shame." They sadly disbanded in 1991. After the breakup Lee Harris and Paul Webb started a band called, .O.Rang, who also featured Matt Johnson of The The and Beth Gibbons from Portishead. Paul Webb also worked with Beth Gibbons on her solo effort. Mark Hollis, from the last I heard, had retired from music.
If anyone else has anything to add, feel free.

Welcome everybody from the chat room and thanks to Jen!

I remember Aldo's. It was one of only a handful of places in Northern NJ where you could go to hear New Order,The Smiths and Sisters Of Mercy and see a dark dancefloor filled with twentysomethings spinning around in wild abandon. The drinks were cheap, the decor was a mix of hipster chic and 60's Diner and everyone who went there could rattle off The Cure's discography at the drop of a hat. Choice selections from MTV's 120 Minutes would be flickering from television screens above the bar and the dancefloor. Maybe I'd be there to get in some heavy duty drinking with pals or maybe meet girls or maybe just hang at the balcony and watch everyone dance, all that mattered was that I had somewhere to go and more importantly somewhere to belong. Whatever happened to those crazy plans and schemes of my youth? Did I leave them beneath that giant Morrissey poster by the arcade game? I'd go back to retrieve them if I could but Aldo's left me in one giant blazing blink of an eye. Let's rebuild it right here and right now.
