I can't sleep, so I decided to make up a music survey you guys can answer. It's pretty easy. I'd love to see what are your music tastes are. I know some of the things you like, but what other things do you like? Just replace my answers with yours. Have fun. :)
What is the very first "rock" song you ever heard? It would have to be "Strawberry Fields Forever" by The Beatles. My parents were listening to their records and this came on.

Hey, Molly! Some of us can't remember that far back! ;-p No, seriously, I'm not sure. I remember playing Elton John's 'Crocodile Rock' on a record player in our basement, so I'll go with that.
As for New Wave, I'm so hopelessly confused as to what's New Wave and what's not, that I'll just presume it's something by the Eurythmics.
When I was a teen, I listened to Styx, the Moody Blues, Boston, Journey, Jefferson Airplane/Starship, Pink Floyd (who I can't stand anymore), Alan Parson's Project and groups like that. My mother liked to sing and listened to celtic music and show tunes, and my dad listened to progressive jazz. I tried to understand why he liked such 'music' as often there was nothing I could recognize as a melody.
I'm still playing 'catch up' with Modern Rock music, having taken a several year long sidetrip along the way. If anyone is interested in listening to the sort of music I like, there's a player here: Kitt's Playlist and a post about how I got here on my LJ here: Kitt's LJ post

I'm the youngest of four brothers, so I got to listen to all sorts of stuff growing up. I heard lots of Queen, avid Bowie, and Devo when I was 9-10-11. After that, my oldest brother got me into Ska and some other stuff. The first LP I purchased with my own money was Oingo Boingo, "Dead Man's Party." I bought it at a department store when they had music departments? (remember that?) I still have it, and it still sounds good.
What is the very first "rock" song you ever heard?
Wow, Molly, these are some fierce questions. So as hardcore as this is “House of The Rising Sun” by the Animals was the first rock song I ever heard(that says a lot, I bet.) My parents had put all the good stuff out of my reach until I was older but they had this big 50-60-70’s box set that was so heavy they just left it at the back of the closet. I remember playing it on my rickety plastic turntable. It was like the 3rd song to come on and, wow.
What was the first New Wave song you ever heard? Is “Who Can It Be Now” by Men at Work considered New Wave? If not it was probably Erasure.
Who inspired your musical tastes? FM 106.3! I started listening in middle school. They shaped me with They Might Be Giants, Rusted Root, Sublime, Semisonic, Soul Coughing and Matthew Sweet (OMG do I remember the first time I heard “Devil With The Green Eyes”). I discovered Elvis and 8o’s music on my own – with a plastic crackling smurf head shaped radio. My friends in high school were mostly Goths who got me into Depeche Mode, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Peter Murphy. I didn’t really get into the Beatles until my friend Chris senior year of high school. My sister, bless her heart was all about Matchbox 20 and the Backstreet Boys. I did lure her to the darkside with TMBG and now she’s a big ESB fan, so exhale everyone she’s gonna be just fine ;) My Dad gave me the Moody Blues and Simon and Garfunkle and my mom gave me “the oldies” - yes the entire genre (The Left Bank played her prom!) and Barry Manilow.
Who are some of your favorite Modern Rock/New Wave/Alternative/whatever bands/artists? All of the above, and Our Lady Peace, MGMT, K’s Choice, The Caulfields/John Faye Power Trip, Authority Zero, Smashing Pumpkins, Concrete Blonde, Guster, Dexter Freebish, the Killers, the Connell’s, October Project, REM, Semisonic, Superdrag, Will Daily, Violent Femmes, Peter Searcy (for starters)
Who are some of your other favorite music artists/bands?
Eric Stuart Band, Steve Miller Band, Dave Matthews Band, any guy’s name followed by the word “band” I guess, (J. Giles Band?) Linken Park, Tom Petty, Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers/The Refreshments, Led Zepplin, The Police/Sting, Sean Paul, DJ Dean, Nostrum, Stephen Lynch - he’s just hysterical!

Hmm..the very first rock song I ever heard? Probably "Dizzy" by Tommy Roe. My Mom had it on 45 and somewhere she has a tape of me singing it at about 6 years old so that must be the first one.
The first New Wave song? Once again Mom to the rescue. Blondie's "Autoamerican" album. She had it on 8-Track.
Who inspired your musical tastes? Mom! LOL Later on listening to WLIR/WDRE and then a little later on when I lived in Virginia...me! Late at night under the covers looking for oddball music on my transistor radio (I had one of those little ear plugs to listen through) as well as Top 40 radio. Then I discovered the Beatles and all hell broke loose.
Who are some of your favorite New Wave/Alt/Modern Rock artists? PSYCHEDELIC FURS!!!! XTC,Smiths,Robyn Hitchcock,New Order etc. etc.
Some of your favorite other music? I listen to practically everything. A lot of 60's rock/pop with The Beach Boys being the mainstays followed by The Byrds, Dylan,The Doors, Motown artists....love the 50's...Elvis, Buddy Holly....standards...Sinatra, Crosby, Bobby Darin...all that corny soft rock from the 70's everyone made fun of... "Baby Come Back" by Player, "Afternoon Delight"...etc. There really is'nt much that I don't listen to aside from jazz and country although I dig Chet Baker and Johnny Cash and if I'm in the mood for either I have no problem with 'em.
